How to Reach Wayanad: Airport, Train and Road Routes with Taxi Tips
How to reach Wayanad by air, train or road: the nearest airports and railway stations, the main road routes from Kozhikode, Mysore, Bangalore, Kochi and Coimbatore, the Thamarassery Ghat, the Bandipur night closure, and which cab suits your group.

Wayanad has no airport and no railway station of its own, so every trip ends with a drive up into the hills. The quickest and most comfortable way in is to fly or take a train to Kozhikode (Calicut) or Kannur, then book a Wayanad taxi service for the final 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road.
This guide covers each route in turn: the nearest airports, the nearest railway stations, and the main roads from Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi and Coimbatore. It also explains the Bandipur night closure, the Thamarassery Ghat, and how to choose the right Wayanad cab service for your group.
01Wayanad at a Glance: Where You Are Actually Going
Wayanad is a district, not a single town. Before you book a transfer, know which town your hotel or homestay is near, because it changes your best route.
- Kalpetta: the district headquarters, central Wayanad.
- Vythiri and Lakkidi: at the top of the ghat road from Kozhikode, with many resorts.
- Sulthan Bathery: east Wayanad, on the road towards Mysore and Bangalore.
- Mananthavady: north Wayanad, closer to Kannur, Thirunelli and Tholpetty.
- Meppadi: south of Kalpetta, towards Chembra and the tea estates.
Share your exact stay location when you book. A good driver will pick the shortest, safest road to it.
02How to Reach Wayanad by Air
Three airports serve Wayanad. Distances below are approximate road distances to Wayanad and vary by the town you are heading to.
| Airport | Distance to Wayanad | Drive time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calicut International Airport (CCJ), Karipur | Approx. 90–100 km | Around 3 hours | Kalpetta, Vythiri, Meppadi, central and south Wayanad |
| Kannur International Airport (CNN) | Approx. 85–130 km | Around 3–3.5 hours | Mananthavady, Thirunelli and north Wayanad |
| Mysore Airport | Varies by town | Plan with your driver | Travellers arriving from the Karnataka side |

Calicut Airport to Wayanad
Calicut International Airport at Karipur is the most common choice. It has more domestic connections, and the road runs through Kozhikode and up the Thamarassery Ghat on NH 766.
A pre-booked Calicut to Wayanad taxi is the simplest option after a flight. With Safari Tours' Calicut and Kannur airport taxi service, your driver tracks your flight, waits at arrivals with a name board, and adjusts for delays.

Kannur Airport to Wayanad
Kannur International Airport is a good alternative if you are staying in north Wayanad. The road climbs through the Kannur hills towards Mananthavady, avoiding Kozhikode city traffic.
Airport tips
- Book your airport taxi to Wayanad before you fly, especially for late-night arrivals.
- Share your flight number so the driver can track delays.
- If you land after dark, expect slower driving on the ghat road. That is normal and safer.
- Keep some cash for snacks or tea on the way; mobile signal can drop in the hills.
03How to Reach Wayanad by Train
There is no railway line into Wayanad. The nearest stations are on the coast, and you complete the trip by road.
| Railway station | Distance to Wayanad | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Kozhikode (Calicut), station code CLT | Approx. 85–95 km | Around 2.5–3 hours |
| Kannur | Approx. 100–150 km | Around 3.5–4 hours |
| Thalassery | Varies by town | Plan with your driver |
| Mysore Junction | Approx. 120–150 km (Mysore city) | Around 3.5–4 hours |

Kozhikode is the main railhead, with trains along the west coast from Kochi, Mangalore, Mumbai and beyond. Kannur and Thalassery suit north Wayanad. Travellers coming from Bangalore by train can get off at Mysore and drive in from the east.
KSRTC buses also run from Kozhikode to Wayanad towns such as Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady. They are cheap but slower, and less practical with luggage or children. A railway station taxi to Wayanad can meet you at the platform entrance, including early-morning arrivals.
04How to Reach Wayanad by Road
Wayanad is well linked by road to Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. These are the main routes taxi travellers use.
| From | Approx. distance | Approx. drive time | Main route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kozhikode | Approx. 85–100 km | Around 2.5–3 hours | NH 766 via Thamarassery Ghat |
| Mysore | Approx. 120–150 km | Around 3.5–4 hours | Via Gundlupet and Bandipur, or via Hunsur and Kutta |
| Coimbatore | Approx. 230–250 km | Around 6–6.5 hours | Via the Palakkad, Nilgiris and Gudalur |
| Kochi | Approx. 260–280 km | Around 6–7 hours | Via Thrissur and Kozhikode |
| Bangalore | Approx. 280–300 km | Around 6–7 hours | Via Mysore and Bandipur (route guide) |

Kozhikode to Wayanad via the Thamarassery Ghat
Most visitors from the Kerala side climb the Thamarassery Ghat, also called the Wayanad Ghat or Thamarassery Churam. According to Kerala Tourism, the pass has nine hairpin bends and runs about 14 km from Adivaram to Lakkidi.
At the top, Lakkidi Viewpoint looks back over the bends and valleys. It is a natural first stop on any Kozhikode to Wayanad cab ride.
Ghat tips
- Weekend and holiday afternoons can bring slow traffic on the bends.
- Heavy rain can slow or close the ghat road. Check the status before you leave during the monsoon.
- Do not stop on the bends for photos. Use the viewpoint instead.

Bangalore and Mysore to Wayanad: the Bandipur Night Closure
The direct road from Mysore to Sulthan Bathery is NH 766, which passes through the Bandipur and Wayanad forest reserves. Night traffic on this forest stretch has been banned from 9 pm to 6 am since 2009 to protect wildlife, as reported by Deccan Herald.
What this means for your trip
- Plan to cross Bandipur in daylight. From Bangalore, an early-morning start is usually best.
- If you are running late, the alternative route goes via Hunsur, Gonikoppal and Kutta to Mananthavady, then on to Kalpetta. It adds distance.
- Watch for wildlife. Elephants, deer and other animals cross the forest roads. Drive slowly and never feed animals.
- Rules can change. The closure has been debated in court for years, so confirm the current timings before you travel.
Safari Tours runs outstation taxi trips between Wayanad and Bangalore or Mysore, with drivers who plan around the forest timings.
05Why Book a Taxi for Your Wayanad Arrival?

You can reach Wayanad by bus, but a taxi is often the better choice for visitors.
- Door-to-door. No changing from train to bus to auto with luggage.
- Any hour. Late flights and early trains are covered.
- Hill-road experience. Local drivers handle the ghat bends and forest roads every day.
- Sightseeing on the way. Stop at Lakkidi or a tea estate instead of rushing to the hotel.
- Good value for groups. One vehicle for the whole family can cost less per head than separate tickets.
If you plan to explore after arriving, the same driver can take you around. See our Wayanad sightseeing taxi tours or follow our one-day Wayanad itinerary by taxi.
06Choosing the Right Cab for Your Group

| Group | Suggested vehicle |
|---|---|
| Solo traveller or couple | Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios sedan |
| Family with luggage | Toyota Innova |
| Group of 6–24 | Tempo Traveller |
| Group of 25–50 | Mini bus or full-size bus (group travel) |
When you book, share your arrival time, pickup point, group size and luggage. Ask what the fare includes, such as tolls, parking and driver allowance.
07Practical Tips Before You Travel to Wayanad

- Best season: October to May is the most comfortable for travel and sightseeing. June to September brings heavy rain and occasional road disruptions.
- Carry a light jacket. Wayanad is noticeably cooler than the coast, especially in the mornings.
- Download offline maps. Signal can drop on the ghat and in forest stretches.
- Avoid night driving through forests unless your driver knows the route well.
- Check attraction status. Some sites close for rain, maintenance or safety. Confirm before you go.
